PART 2
Three days later, Vanessa invited me to lunch.
She was suddenly sweet.
“Dad, I hope you weren’t offended.”
“Of course not.”
She smiled.
“I knew you’d understand.”
Daniel sat beside her, silent again.
Vanessa slid a folder across the table.
“We’re trying to reorganize the company.”
I opened it.
There were proposed changes to Harrison & Cole Logistics.
New executive positions.
New ownership percentages.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Vanessa Cole.
I looked up.
“You want shares?”
“Not want,” she corrected. “Need.”
“For what?”
“Growth.”
I almost laughed.
Vanessa had worked at the company for less than eight months.
She had no executive authority.
Yet somehow, she had already prepared documents transferring significant voting power to herself.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Dad, it’s just paperwork.”
“No.”
He frowned.
“What?”
“This is control.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You’re getting older. We need to think about the future.”
There it was.
The
sentence people used when they wanted to steal something without admitting it.
I closed the folder.
“I’ll think about it.”
They believed that meant yes.
It didn’t.
That afternoon, my attorney, Martin Reed, met me at the office.
He placed a second folder on my desk.
“You were right to call me.”
I opened it.
Vanessa had been contacting employees.
She had also spoken with one of our competitors.
But the biggest revelation was hidden in the company’s financial records.
Martin pointed to several transfers.
“Your son authorized these.”
My chest tightened.
“How much?”
“Four hundred eighty thousand dollars.”
“For what?”
“Consulting fees.”
The consulting company was owned by Vanessa’s brother.
I stared at the documents.
Daniel had betrayed me.
Not because Vanessa forced him.
Because he had chosen her.
Martin continued.
“And there’s another problem.”
He opened a corporate registry report.
Vanessa had secretly registered a company using a
name
